The best root system adapted for anchorage is the tap root system.

A tap root system is composed of a main root that burrows deep underground. These roots are thick, strong, and resistant to damage. The main root also has several branching roots which help improve anchorage and covered area for gathering nutrients and water. As compared to the fibrous root system which is composed of several fine fibers of roots that hold only onto the upper layer of the soil.

The tap root system is only found in dicotyledonous plants. Whereas fibrous root system is found in monocotyledonous plants. Examples of dicots are:
